| The original Sneaker Pimps |
When it comes to trip-hop or downtempo music, the Sneaker Pimps are just one of the very few British bands that ranks at the top of my list (I must emphasise this is prior, I repeat, prior to Kelli Dayton, aka Kelli Ali, leaving the band).
The band's first album Becoming X, is/was their best production (post-Kelli albums didn't succeed to the same extent). I used to play this album (back then I had the cassette tape!) on repeat loop whenever I went to bed at night. Sneaker Pimp's high-charting singles like 6 Underground, Spin Spin Sugar, and Tesko Suicide have that creepy bubblegum feel and emotional intensity that pleases the dark and ambient mood I sometimes get into...Play their music and I imagine a faintly-lit bar with sofas and leather couches, colours of velvet and dark wood, a bookcase on the wall filled with classic literary works of all times, lava lamps in the corners, smoke rings dissipating in the air, and of course, one can't forget the poison of choice in hand. If I could recreate this fantasy bar into reality, I wouldn't be surprised to see a niche market of customers visiting who obviously have the same peculiar tastes for something deeper than the commercial hip hop or electro music that is so prevalent in the night scene today.
Contrary to the fad of DJs to remix popular original tracks by music artists, I think trip-hop needs to be left alone as it is -- like, I don't wanna hear a house or hip hop version of Post Modern Sleaze-- that just absolutely kills the mood man! Maybe dubstep and DnB might work for certain tracks, but if it's slow song, again, let it be!
